台灣 漫画 ~ Taiwan’s and Korea’s Manga?!, and a history of Manga ~ 台灣 漫画

“Hold up!  Wait a minute!  Do you actually mean to say that Taiwan and KOREA make Manga TOO? PALATABLE MANGA??? You’ve GOT to be kidding me!”

No, my friend, I’m afraid I’m NOT kidding!  Japan is NOT the only country with a monopoly on graphic novels!

Who can say when they really began in the USA, but graphic novels have been considered popular media in America since the 1920’s (Comic Books! Come on, you ALL know what a comic book is!  It’s that thing for nerdy teenagers to drool over instead of PLAYBOY!  Does Captain America or Spiderman ring a bell?)  Japan jumped on the bandwagon after WWII, and Manga (漫画) became something so commonplace that you will often see ADULTS reading them on the trains and WHOLE STORES dedicated to the selling only manga.  Japan also has their share of Otaku (= our nerdy teenagers), but still the obsession with Manga in Japan is MUCH less underground/hidden than in America. You certainly would NOT see a grown man reading a comic book on a public train in Boston, but you definitely would in Tokyo!   Astro boy was a BIG hit in Japan post-WWII and became the first mainstream manga/anime in America – to the point where my parents believe that it was originally American ;P  Who knows why a small boy-robot in a speedo would become so popular, but we are talking about the American generation that grew up to become hippies, so I guess anything goes.

Astro Boy! The beginings of Manga in the USA!

Astro Boy! Robot-Boy in a Speedo with Rockets for Legs!

“So how the HECK did manga get to Taiwan?”

Actually, China (and presumably Taiwan) has a LONGER history with Graphic novels than Japan does.. and probably America too if you take a look at Chinese art from the 1700s!  (OMG! Are you kidding?!) They were printing series by the 1920s too, and making magazines for subscriptions before Japan did.  They called their manga “manhua” (漫画) before the Japanese adopted the term “manga” (漫画 <— Hey! It’s spelled the same in both languages!  How convenient… and it sounds alike… Coincidence? I think NOT! The terms definitely share a common origin.)  Taiwanese manga is fairly widespread today, but still nowhere near as well-known in America.  So, to tell the truth and ruin everyone’s illusions, Japanese manga probably came back from China with soldiers after WWII (probably very little influence from America’s comics at all, although American animation HEAVILY influenced the TV serialization of manga as ANIME).  BUT for all you OTAKU out there who NEED to think Japan is the best! (一番!), Japan definitely made manga and anime more popular in the USA than China ever did.

I’m currently reading a Taiwanese manhua named “The One” about a model and two very handsome twin men. (女注意!<— GIRL ALERT! Ok, so I’m a GIRL! Give me a break!  I love this cheesy romance stuff!!! I SWEAR this one has a PLOT!  I actually hate romance manga/manhua without a good plot.)   I’m sure there’s plenty of manly, “shoot-em-up” Taiwanese manhua out there for you “manly men” too – I just don’t know about them!

“Didn’t you say something earlier about South Korea making Manga too?”

Oh YES.  South Korea loves their graphic novels too!  Wouldn’t you know South Korea, with it’s small, teency-weency, little obsession with taking over every good Japanese pop-culture trend, has just jumped on the bandwagon in the past 20 years or so.  They are actually getting into the USA manga market with their “manhwa – 만화 ” (hmmm…this word sounds strangly similar, yet again…). I don’t know if their manga is beating out Taiwan’s or not in the USA, but I think the S. Korean style of humor  and flow of language translates better to an American audience.  ( Just my personal opinion! )

In the future I’ll try to post my new favorite manga/manhua/manhwa….  these terms are so confusing!!  I’m just going to call it Manga from now on!

Most popular Korean pop music in August!

I know you’ve all been waiting!  Here are the top ten songs from S. Korea for the 3rd week in August!

Baristas in Seoul – Coffee Art takes over a nation and it’s Television Dramas!

Coffee and Coffee Art is the new big Craze in S. Korea today – or as the Koreans say “Kah-Pi”.  The word sounds suspiciously like COPY to me, but hey, what are you gonna do if your language doesn’t contain an “F” sound.  (So yeah, I’m sure this is inconvenient when telling someone to F-off comes off as “puck you!”)

Back to the main point, they’ve taken coffee shops and Baristas to a whole new level, sometimes even receiving training in ITALY to become coffee artists!  Our starbucks and little “spot coffee” shops don’t even TOUCH the level of elegance you can find in one expensively decorated latte in Seoul!   Not only that, the coffee must be made with water at a specific temperature, with special coffee blends, and the correct technique that gives it that “JE NE SAIS QUE” that makes it such a thrilling experience.  The whole process expresses the precision and beauty that has always been present in Asian tea ceremonies. Hell, tea, coffee, it’s all CAFFEINE right?!

AND OF COURSE, like all other new trends in S. Korea, it became the theme of a fantastically popular Korean Drama called “Coffee Prince” or “1st shop of coffee prince” – yet another one of those “girl dresses like boy and gets a fantastic man in the end” dramas.  BUT I LOVE IT ANYWAYS~!

Coffee Art

Most Popular Songs in Korea today! – nevermind the obvious 80s style clothing!

TOP SONGS IN KOREA NOW!

I always find that S.Korea has the best entertainment industry, and the stars have great senses of humor, unlike our untouchable, bratty celebrities who flip you off when you try to take a picture.  However, they’ve got this late 80s/early 90s look going on that TOTALLY confuses me!  Take a look at:

the top ten from the last week in July

and you’ll see what I mean.  Leather clothes, jean jackets, and odd hairdos all meant to be glamourous = USA in the 80s/90s!

Now it’s time for Marie’s off-beat pick of the WEEK!

I really like the MV for Wondergirl’s song Nobody.  Don’t pay attention to the begining song – like all other Korean MV! – but the toliet scene just made me fall of the bed laughing!  The dance became QUITE popular in Korean when it first came out.  Enjoy!!

Wondergirl – Nobody – with english subs

.. Sorry, these are the most recent songs I could find!!  Have fun feeding your addiction people!

Want to request anything? Maleba! (translation – Tell Me!)

MARIE’S OFF-BEAT PICK OF THE WEEK!!!

~Still Doll, by Kanon Wakeshima!!~

Kanon Wakeshima was made popular by the anime “Vampire Knight” which used her song in it’s main titles. She is classically trained and states that she takes inspiration from the French artist Emilie Simon. Ms. Kanon’s music and anime both belong to the VERY popular genre called “gothic lolita” (which I call “victorian baby-doll”) which would be equivalent but far more popular and glamourous than America’s “goths”. You can find teenagers dressed in gothic lolita clothing, hanging out in Tokyo’s Harajuku section every weekend! – see picts below and scroll down for video of Harajuku!

Vampire Knight - an EXTREMELY popular anime and manga (comic).

ASIANIC AGE

ようこそWhat is Asianic Age?!?ようこそ

Asianic Age is a place to go beyond anime and manga, beyond dramas, and search into the deep obsession that is Asia. Of course, there’ll be plenty of manga, anime and dramas too. :P

Here you’ll find aspects of Japanese, Korean, and other asian cultures that you never knew existed… answers to questions like, “Why do anime characters get NOSEBLEEDS during certain scenes?”, “What genre of music is in the opening to this anime?” and “WHAT the heck is so romantic about offering a pot lid to a girl to eat RAMEN?”.

A website made by westerners, for westerners, to explain the myriad of Asian cultural ideas we didn’t grow up with, but like nonetheless; Asianic Age will delve into the modern pop scenes and the ancient traditions that feed them IN LOTS OF DETAIL, so be prepared to experience the…
